All About Dental Care – Preschool Activities For Children



Dental hygiene is incredibly important, as we all know. There is nothing more dazzling on the human body than a gorgeous set of pearly whites. If you want your kids to have these pearly whites, though, you will need to get them on the right track as far as dental hygiene is concerned as early as possible. While you obviously cannot teach an infant or toddler proper hygiene, you can actually begin teaching them these valuable concepts during preschool. Here are a few preschool activities you can do for children to teach them about dental care.

Match ‘Em Up

Take construction paper and cut out basic shapes representing dental care, such as a tooth, a toothbrush, a sparkle (basically a star design), and any other object you may want to include. Then, put the items in a pile and let your children pick out the proper items and put them in the proper order. For example, you can have a paper tube of toothpaste that they would pick and “use” on the toothbrush. They can then brush the tooth with the toothbrush. When they are finished, congratulate them, tell them that the tooth is “clean”, and put the sparkle on it to show them. This is a good hands-on activity to introduce them to dental care.

Write a Story

Take some construction paper and perhaps a scrapbook and make a story about dental care to show your children. Use basic shapes and lots of color to keep your kids interest, and tell the story in an engaging manner while encouraging them to participate. For example, you can make the main character a tooth and have him travel with his friends (a toothbrush, floss, etc.).

Charades

Gather the preschool group around and tell them that they are going to learn about teeth. Then, do charades that represent the steps of brushing the teeth. You can start off by saying something like, “Everyone point to their teeth!” They will then point to their teeth. Then, pretend you are picking up a toothbrush and get them to do the same. Then, apply toothpaste and “brush” your teeth. They will follow along and get into the process (as well as stay entertained throughout).

These are just a few examples of activities you can use to teach your preschool kids about dental care. The limit is really on your own imagination. Just know that preschool children, on a whole, are old enough to start learning about dental care and the responsibility that comes with it, even if they may not be old enough to do it on their own. Pregnancy Dental Health Tips



Proper oral care is very important during your pregnancy. The latest research shows that, pregnant women that also have gum disease are at a higher risk of having preterm birth which conicides with lower than normal birth weight. Preterm births put the new born at risk for developing other serious health concerns. Soon to be mothers need to start making their oral health a higher priority. Oral Hygiene – Expectant mothers need to have proper oral hygiene. This includes proper brushing and flossing after every meal. Oral hygiene prevents cavities and gum disease. Ensuring a healthy pregnancy requires taking proper care of your teeth as well as the rest of your body.

Fluoride – The ADA encourages expectant mothers increase their use of fluoride to include the addition of over the counter fluoride rinse (alcohol free) as well as using enriched fluoride toothpaste.

Nutrition – All expectant mothers know they need to have a proper healthy diet. What they may not realize is that by avoiding sugar intake they can reduce their risk of dental decay from plaque buildup.

Remove Tooth Decay – If a pregnant women currently has dental decay it must be removed. Dental procedures are perfectly safe for the mother and the unborn baby. Removing the decay will lower the babies risk of low birth weight.

Bacteria- Bacterial transmission from sharing food, utensils and drinks can lead to decay and should be avoided by expectant mothers.

Xylitol-Research shows chewing xylitol enriched gum during pregnancy will lower your risk of tooth decay.

While pregnancy is a stressful and exhausting period you need to make sure you continue to take proper care of your teeth for the good of the baby’s health.

Despite the health risks, millions of us are still smoking. Besides cancer, smoking can really affect your dental health as well.

In addition to the damage smoking can do to your heart and lungs, it can also have a severe impact on the health of your dental situation. Smokers are over six times more likely to get gum disease than those who do not smoke. Smoking not only damages the teeth, but it makes recovering from any type of dental procedure much more difficult.

Smoking stains the teeth. It turns them a yellowish color. The tar in cigarettes can also leave brown stains on your teeth. Normally, the saliva in the mouth helps to neutralize the pH inside the mouth. This allows the damage done by plaque to the tooth enamel to be corrected. Procedures such as dental implants are often not recommended for smokers because of the continued damage that smoking will do, even after the implants are placed.

The good news is that if a smoker quits smoking, the health of their gums can increase within a year. They won’t be able to undo the damage that has been done, but once they stop smoking, their teeth will be able to hold up much longer. They can receive treatment which can help them repair the damage to their teeth and prevent future damage. Smokers who quit smoking can save their teeth before it is too late.
